A woman was arrested in Mexicali, northern Mexico, after her 3-year-old son died after being left inside a vehicle for several hours in what authorities are investigating as a case of negligence.

According to initial reports, the mother had gone out partying the previous night and had taken the child with her. Upon returning home at around 11:00 p.m., she reportedly parked the vehicle and exited the car alone.

Authorities were alerted after neighbors in the area reported, around midday, that a child appeared unconscious inside a vehicle parked in front of a home located in the La Rioja neighborhood.

When emergency responders and police arrived at the scene, they found the child unresponsive and without vital signs. Preliminary reports suggest the boy may have died from heatstroke due to the extremely high temperatures registered in the region.

According to the statement provided by the mother, identified as Roxana “N,” she had gone out partying that night and returned home in a heavily intoxicated state. She allegedly told investigators that, after getting out of the vehicle, she did not realize the child had remained inside the car.

She later entered her home, took a shower, and went to sleep.

According to her testimony, it was not until the following morning that she noticed the child was missing — at the same time authorities were already responding to the case following calls from neighbors.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to fully determine what happened and establish any possible legal responsibility.
