A motor glider crashed onto a highway in western Germany on Saturday, killing the pilot and seriously injuring another passenger. The accident occurred on the A45 motorway near the town of Hünsborn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Although German authorities have not yet officially confirmed the cause of the crash, our investigative team analyzed images from the scene and identified a possible key factor.

Photos and videos appear to show the glider’s air brakes deployed shortly after takeoff something that normally should not happen during that phase of flight. Speaking to our team, aviation expert Heinrich Großbongardt said the deployed air brakes may have caused a loss of lift and directly contributed to the crash.

At this stage, it remains unclear why the air brakes were open. Investigators are considering several possibilities, including a technical malfunction or a locking issue that may have allowed them to deploy accidentally during flight.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft had taken off from a nearby small sports airfield, where a regional aviation event was scheduled to take place over the weekend.

The glider was initially being towed into the air by another aircraft to gain altitude, while its auxiliary engine was not in use. Shortly after disconnecting from the tow cable, the aircraft reportedly lost stability and crashed onto the highway at around 12:10 p.m.

The 56-year-old pilot died at the scene. According to information obtained by our team, he had extensive aviation experience and was believed to be a former Lufthansa pilot. The second occupant, aged 49, suffered severe injuries and underwent emergency surgery. Authorities said his condition is stable, although his life remains at risk.

Despite the aircraft crashing directly onto an active motorway, no motorists were injured. However, the incident forced authorities to completely shut down the highway, causing major traffic jams in both directions for several hours.

Specialists from Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation are continuing to work alongside police investigators to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The local aviation club stated that the flight was apparently part of a preliminary test to assess weather and thermal conditions before the official start of the weekend’s flying activities.

The tragedy left pilots, organizers and spectators at the airfield deeply shaken. Crisis counselors were also deployed to assist witnesses following the accident.
