The health crisis linked to the Antarctic cruise ship MV Hondius continues to intensify as diplomatic, medical, and port authorities face mounting pressure over the Hantavirus outbreak detected onboard. Cruise operator Oceanwide confirmed this Friday that at least 30 passengers disembarked before the outbreak was officially identified — seven more than previously reported.

According to the company’s latest update, the passengers left the vessel on the island of Saint Helena and represent at least 12 different nationalities, raising fears among international health authorities about the possible spread of the virus. The body of the first victim connected to the outbreak was also transported off the ship before the exact cause of death had been determined.

In Spain, the handling of the situation has exposed conflicting messages within the government itself. The Ministries of Health and Defense remain divided over whether the quarantine imposed on the 14 Spanish passengers from the MV Hondius, currently isolated at Madrid’s Gómez Ulla military hospital, should be mandatory.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated last night that the isolation would be “voluntary,” arguing that the passengers are currently asymptomatic and therefore cannot legally be subjected to forced confinement without judicial authorization. Patients are expected to sign consent forms agreeing to medical supervision.

However, Spain’s Health Ministry has taken a firmer stance. Officials indicated that the government is prepared to use “all available legal mechanisms” to ensure compliance with quarantine measures, considering the passengers to be high-risk close contacts.

“The logical response is for these individuals to want protection, medical monitoring, and the best possible care,” health authorities stated amid growing public concern over the outbreak’s evolution.

Meanwhile, the MV Hondius continues its voyage across the Atlantic toward Tenerife, where it is expected to dock next Sunday under heightened sanitary controls.

The ship’s arrival has triggered serious concern in the Canary Islands. Workers at the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Granadilla have warned they may partially shut down port operations if authorities fail to clarify emergency health protocols before the vessel arrives.

Union representatives accuse the Port Authority of providing “virtually no information” and claim workers still do not know what protective measures will be implemented in the face of a potential biological risk.

Tensions continue to rise as the cruise ship approaches the island, becoming the center of an international health emergency that is testing coordination between governments and public health agencies.
